About Burn Rate Solitaire: A Financial Strategy Game
Welcome to Burn Rate Solitaire, an innovative business-simulation modification of the classic Klondike Solitaire card game. Designed by GPS Research Publishers, this free educational game challenges you to balance your company's cash flow, manage operational expenses (OpEx), and maximize your Return on Investment (ROI) while attempting to clear the board.
Unlike traditional solitaire where time or move counts are your only constraints, Burn Rate Solitaire introduces real-world financial pressures. You begin your journey with a limited pool of Venture Capital (VC). Every move you make costs money, and every card you successfully move to the foundation generates vital revenue. Can you dominate the market before your startup runs out of funding?
Core Business Rules & Financials
The Objective
Build all four suits into the foundation piles (Ace to King) before your capital is depleted. Efficiency and cost-management are the keys to victory.
The Balance Sheet
- Starting Capital: You begin with $50,000 in Venture Capital funding.
- Revenue Generation: Earn +$5,000 for every card successfully moved to a Foundation pile.
- OpEx (Move Cost): Incur a -$1,000 operational expense per card moved within the tableau or from the waste pile.
- Marketing (Draw Cost): Pay -$1,000 per card drawn from the stock pile to discover new opportunities.
Bankruptcy
If your Capital drops to $0 or less, your burn rate has exceeded your revenue. The company goes bankrupt, and the game ends immediately.
Strategic Gameplay: Managing Your Burn Rate
To succeed in Burn Rate Solitaire, you must think like a CEO or CFO. Here are essential strategies to keep your business out of bankruptcy:
- Optimize Your Marketing Spend: Selecting your marketing cycle (drawing 1, 2, or 3 cards) drastically alters your cash flow. Drawing 3 cards at once helps you find playable cards faster, but requires a larger upfront capital investment ($3,000 instead of $1,000). Adjust your strategy dynamically based on your current cash reserves.
- Minimize Unnecessary Moves: Because every move within the tableau incurs an Operational Expense (OpEx) of $1,000, you cannot shuffle cards around aimlessly. Plan your moves carefully to ensure every action has a clear path to a positive ROI.
- Leverage the Auto-Fund Feature: In business, efficiency is money. Use the "Auto-Fund" button (or double-tap individual cards) to quickly secure revenue by moving eligible cards directly to the foundation. Note that standard operational costs still apply to these automated moves, but it prevents you from missing obvious revenue opportunities.
