About the Custom Map Builder

The Custom Map Builder was developed in response to a brilliant suggestion from our community. We actively listen to our users to build the resources you need mostβ€”so if you have an idea for a new free tool, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can submit a request at our Contact Us page.

This versatile application was designed for a wide range of geographic and historical projects. Whether you are a history teacher illustrating the expansion of an ancient empire, a student charting the progression of a pivotal battle, or a researcher mapping out vital trade routes, this custom map maker makes it easy to bring geographical data to life.

Visualizing complex spatial information has never been simpler. Using our browser-based map editor, you can intuitively draw custom polygons to represent distinct territories, create dashed or dotted lines to signify migration paths, and drop highly customizable pins to mark capital cities, architectural wonders, or crucial natural resources like salt mines and precious metals.

Beyond the classroom, this tool is also a favorite among creative writers, worldbuilders, and tabletop RPG game masters who need a real-world geographic canvas to draft alternate histories or modern logistical plans. Best of all, the application runs entirely in your browser. No software installation or premium subscriptions are required, and your map data remains completely private and secure until you choose to export it.

How to Use This Free Map Creator

  1. Define Your Element: Use the Active Selection panel on the left to set up the properties of the item you want to draw. Enter a descriptive Name and Description, pick a prominent Color, adjust the Transparency, and select an appropriate Icon or Path Style (e.g., solid borders or dashed routes).
  2. Draw on the Map: Under Map Drawing Tools, select the action you wish to perform (Draw Area, Draw Road, Place Marker, or Add Text). Click directly on the interactive map to begin drawing. For complex lines and territorial areas, simply double-click to finish the shape.
  3. Edit and Manage: Made a mistake or need to refine a border? Click the Edit Shapes tool to safely drag boundary points around. To change the internal details of an existing place (like updating its color, opacity, or icon), click the Edit button next to its name in the Marked Places list, or click on the item directly on the map itself.
  4. Search Landmarks: Need to find a specific historical site, modern city, or geographical feature? Use the Search icon (magnifying glass) in the top right corner of the map view to instantly jump to real-world locations.
  5. Export and Save: Once your custom map is complete, you can safely save your progress. Click Export Map (.geojson) to download a standard geographic data file of your work, which you can later re-load at any time using Import Map. If you want to use the map in a presentation, slideshow, or printed document, select your preferred high-quality image format and click Save Image.
